Background

Focusing on Mushroom Materials

As the demand for eco-friendly and renewable materials grows, mushrooms are being recognized as a new resource. Mushrooms contain substances like chitin and β-glucan, which can be naturally regenerated and used for various applications. However, the methods of obtaining materials from existing mushroom fruiting bodies have been problematic, as they destroy the fungal structure, making full utilization of the natural structure difficult.

Development of Core Technology

To solve this problem, the development of white fungal pulp has been advanced. This new method allows the creation of white fungal fibers while preserving the structure of the mushroom’s mycelium. (Japan patent pending)

Mycelium Market

Japan is at the forefront of artificial mushroom cultivation technology, offering new market opportunities. Nagano Prefecture, in particular, is known for its mushroom production, and the utilization of this new technology is expected to further expand the market. The mycelium market was valued at 28.5 billion dollars in 2022, and rapid growth is forecasted, with white fungal pulp technology expected to bring significant market entry opportunities.

Business Model

We propose a business model that maximizes the utilization of mushroom production in Nagano Prefecture. Through the use of new technology, improvements in regional industrial productivity, summer production adjustments, and solutions to industrial waste issues are expected. Centered on Shinshu University’s innovative technology, a wide-ranging partnership will be built to promote the manufacture and introduction of mushroom-based organic materials.

Vision

The Mycomaterial Technology Consortium aims to create high-value new materials from unused mushroom biomass, contributing to the bio-economy, fostering new industries, and creating employment. By promoting inter-company collaboration, supporting product development, and advancing joint research, the consortium seeks to strengthen cooperation with regional industries, establish Japan’s unique mushroom material technology, and strive for global expansion.
